Clackamas Goes Bald for St. Baldrick’s
On July 21st, nine brave Clackamas staff members shaved their heads to raise money for childhood cancer research through St. Baldrick’s Foundation. You may have seen our live video of the event on Facebook. We spent a little more time with each “shavee” to figure out more about why they braved to shave!
Q: Why did you decide to shave your head for St. Baldrick’s?
A: I love doing things for others in general, but I have spent some time on the oncology floor at a children’s hospital and it is heartbreaking. I’m down for anything I can do to help prevent even one child from having to go through that experience.
Q: What is your favorite thing about your newly-bald head?
A: The breeze!
Q: What would you tell someone who is on the fence about participating in this event?
A: It’s totally worth it… a well done and emotionally moving event all the way around. Plus, free haircut!
Q: What was the highlight of the event?
A: Watching my amazing co-workers do something so selfless and brave for others.
Q: Why did you decide to shave your head for St. Baldrick’s?
A: I did it all for the cause!
Q: What is your favorite thing about your newly-bald head?
A: I save so much time getting ready for work, it’s cooler in the heat, and I feel free-er!
Q: What would you tell someone who is on the fence about participating in this event?
A: DO IT! Try something new! Get OUT of the BOX!
Q: What was the highlight of the event?
A: The minute it was done!
Q: Why did you decide to shave your head for St. Baldrick’s?
A: First, I think it is an amazing charity to be a part of. I am blessed to be a mother with 3 healthy children and I wanted to help the kids and their families who have to go through incredibly difficult times because of cancer. Second, there was this little girl in our neighborhood named Sophia who was diagnosed with Leukemia before she was one year old. There was a short time when the family would take her on walks around the neighborhood, pulling her in a little red wagon, and everyone thought she was in remission. Then the walks stopped and I found out that Sophia had lost her battle to cancer. I just want kids like Sophia to get a chance to be kids—to run and jump, to play and laugh. No child should have to endure the suffering that cancer brings.
Q: What is your favorite thing about your newly-bald head?
A: I love how the breeze feels! Especially on hot days like this and I am driving with all the windows down. It really is an awesome feeling.
Q: What would you tell someone who is on the fence about participating in this event?
A: Do it! You will NOT have any regrets. Your hair will grow back and your support of this event can help to save the life of a child—that is worth all the hair in the world!
Q: What was the highlight of the event?
A: Honestly, I was impressed by it all. There were such a diverse group of people in attendance. I was especially moved by the parents shaving their heads in support of their children who are sick—they know that hair means very little compared to the life of a child. I was also amazed at the dedication of the nurses that work at Randall’s Children’s Hospital and how devoted they are to the kids that they care for!
Q: Why did you decide to shave your head for St. Baldrick’s?
A: I chose to participate in the shaving portion to support children whom might never have the likelihood to be a child. Children ought to laugh, learn, and enjoy the precious time they have before adult hood. That said, I hope that my donation and support goes to making one child live longer.
Q: What is your favorite thing about your newly-bald head?
A: I love conserving money on hair product and having my two boys laugh at me all the time.
Q: What would you tell someone who is on the fence about participating in this event?
A: DO IT! It is a fulfillment to see so many individuals from different backgrounds share their personal stories. It is a blessing to be a part of such a great event.
Q: What was the highlight of the event?
A: I appreciated my eldest son observing my head get shaved, as well as, meeting the Portland Timber’s mascot!
Q: Why did you decide to shave your head for St. Baldrick’s?
A: I spent some time at Doernbecher as a kid, and I know how hard cancer can be on families. I felt it was the least I could do to help the children fighting cancer and the parents standing by their side.
Q: What is your favorite thing about your newly-bald head?
A: My morning routine is much shorter.
Q: What would you tell someone who is on the fence about participating in this event?
A: Cancer patients don’t get a choice to keep their hair, and potentially will never get to see it grow back.
Q: What was the highlight of the event?
A: I thought the amount of women who shaved their heads was amazing. I think they made a much bigger sacrifice than myself.
Q: Why did you decide to shave your head for St. Baldrick’s?
A: I shaved my head for a couple of reasons. The first being I have two nephews who were diagnosed with cancer as children and the other is, this would be the ONLY reason I would shave my head.
Q: What is your favorite thing about your newly-bald head?
A: To be really honest there are a few, to pick one, I guess that would be that you can’t have a bad hair day!
Q: What would you tell someone who is on the fence about participating in this event?
A: This is an amazing event, for the best cause in the world AND it’s just hair, it will grow back!
Q: What was the highlight of the event?
A: Realizing how many women shaved their heads. I think there were more women than men.
Q: Why did you decide to shave your head for St. Baldrick’s?
A: Cancer sucks. Kids are awesome. I am delighted and proud to work for an organization (after an 18-year career in HR leadership) that would not only allow, but celebrate, a woman participating in this event.
Q: What is your favorite thing about your newly-bald head?
A: How fast I shower in the morning.
Q: What would you tell someone who is on the fence about participating in this event?
A: Don’t take yourself so seriously!
Q: What was the highlight of the event?
A: Being with the Clackamas team all supporting one another and being there together with friends and family.
Q: Why did you decide to shave your head for St. Baldrick’s?
A: I was happy for the chance to join the Clackamas team in supporting a great cause.
Q: What is your favorite thing about your newly-bald head?
A: I like that my hair is always in place.
Q: What would you tell someone who is on the fence about participating in this event?
A: It’s a fun event and for a great cause.
Q: What was the highlight of the event?
A: I enjoyed the feelings of camaraderie with the Clackamas team.
Q: Why did you decide to shave your head for St. Baldrick’s?
A: My daughter was diagnosed with cancer at 5 weeks old. I still remember our first walk down the corridor in the cancer wing. But we were lucky—we eventually got to go home together, cancer-free. I got involved for the kids and the parents who weren’t so lucky. For the parents that had that long, heart-breaking ride home without their child.
Q: What is your favorite thing about your newly-bald head?
A: Dunno, it’s not much different!
Q: What would you tell someone who is on the fence about participating in this event?
A: You will NOT regret it! It is empowering in SO many ways.
Q: What was the highlight of the event?
A: The bravery of children shaving their heads in solidarity; empowered women making a statement; remembering the heartfelt gratitude for my daughter’s health.
